MM M5 STARTER

On my MM M5 diesel there is a rod I push with my foot to start the tractor. I saw a MM M5 GAS tractor today at a tractor show that started with a solenoid an dkey--NOT A PUSH ROD. Can I get that to work on my Diesel????

molinegb----Not quite clear on this. I understand I can't use the components from the GAS tractor, but can my Diesel be converted to start with a key instead of the PUSHROD?????
 
molinegb I guess I AM NOT MAKING MY QUESTION VERY CLEAR-----We need to forget anything and everything about the GAS tractor.....

Were all MM M5 DIESELS ---started using a foot pedal to engage the starter or were some MM M5 DIESELS started using the 12 volt battery----NOT A PUSH ROD.

Your push rod activates 2 functions on the starter.
1. Extends the Bendix drive into the flywheel
2. Turns the starting motor.

To change to a solenoid you would need to change the starter motor contact stud to a bolt connector for output of solenoid
Then you would need to find a solenoid that would activate both functions of the starter.

Such solenoids exist, but finding one with operating dimensions and mounting would be the problem.

All had kicker solenoid on top. They all had 2 12v batteries.Same was used on U diesels,5 Star, M602,M670. All 6 cylinder models also up until mid 60's and they used 3 batteries.Have 6 M5 diesels all same. Gas/lp models used the Prestolite Mej 6001. Diesels used Delco.
 
Thanks for all the help--much appreciated. YOu have 5 MM M5 That is very interesting. I only have one 12 volt battery on my MM M5--YOU think I should have 2 batteries????
 
Take your starter to a shop and have them install a longer stud in the starter case then use a Ford solenoid NAPA number ST81, run the battery to it and a cable from the solenoid to the starter. Then you can use a key start switch
 
Most now use a one big 12v instead of original. They were expensive to maintain as usually one battery would go bad and drain other. Usually happens when batteries in parallel. More current but voltage lower.
