UTU steering

So the thrust bearings on the worm gear in the front end of my 1950 utu have finally falling apart. The bearing race portion of the worm gear badly pitted I am wondering if I can put this in a lathe and machine it down so I could use a regular tapered roller bearing in it. Has anyone done this type of a conversion before or is there another way I should go? Thank you.

I will have to check the parts book to be sure but, I believe they are the same worm gear on all the MMs of that era, just a shorter or longer shaft out the back. That would open up your search to the R and Z series as well for finding a good used one. Bearings should still be available for them from a bearing supplier.
