correct radiator cap

This should be something easy, but I cant find the correct replacement radiator cap for the ZAU I'm working on...it's not the one with the bail, rather it's the later one. This tractor has the original rad, although I don't know the year of manufacture of the tractor, as the ID plates were of tin (first tractor of any make that I ever worked on that used steel/tin for engine and machine tags)...the tractor tag is gone and the engine tag is so corroded, I cant read the numbers. Any help with the proper rad cap or ways to ID the year of manufacture would be greatly appreciated!

If it has twist type rad cap it is a 1951 or 2. 49-50 had the bail type. In 1953 they became the ZB.

Thank you! It's great to have it narrowed down. With close exam, I can see some of the #'s on the engine ID tag. Are engine numbers known by year?

Post what you have on here. It depends on how complete your number is. The year info is out there, BMG for one has a copy. Someone on here may be able to help you.

I will see if I can find a number on mine. I believe they are a 6 or 7 pound of pressure cap. As long as you find one with that pressure and it fits, it should work fine.

Thank you....I believe I found a correct replacement and have ordered one. A lot of good support on this site. I am new to MM's with this ZAU, and I really like the engineering in them....esp the engine.

Thanks for helping! I went out with a bright light today and having a hard time seeing the numbers. I'm thinking of enhancing the plate by spraying some clear gloss on it....thinking it will bring out the numbers. Are there certain beginning numbers for, say a 51 vs. a 52? Also, how many numbers are there, so I can try to figure out the beginning/ending points....also are there any letters or spaces?

Great, that puts some meat on the bone....I'll get a better look at it tomorrow and let you know what I find

It took some time, but I came up with 01817596, and based on your research that would make it a '52. Murphy's law played a role, because one of the hardest number to see was the 7, but I could see a straight slanted line which indicated a 7 rather than any other number. I guess its not the end of the world if I don't know the year of manufacture but I want to learn as much as I can about this interesting beast :) Thank you again!
