Debating Minneapolis-Moline M602

Hi all

I posted on another forum but didn't realize there was a MM page here. Thought this might be a more appropriate place to ask..

Im looking for a bigger tractor than what I got - 1950 TO-20. I dont mind a bit of a project because you can get more bang for the buck and I enjoy tinkering. I just missed a Farmall 856 that had steering issues for ~$3000. I did find a Moline M-602. Stored indoors, original owner (Family) 3000 hrs. The problem is his dad parked it 30 years ago and then passed away He says it ran and worked great until the day he parked it. He just never got on it afterwards and always had intentions of using it again but didn't for what ever reason. I can relate to this because I have a 46 CJ-2 from my grandpa same situation... He is asking $3000. I talked to him, hes 2 hrs away. I think if I go to him I can maybe get it for $2000. Is it worth the risk? I'm not worried about draining / changing fluids, changing filters and hoses. cleaning the injectors and such. Its more is the engine seized beyond use? I don't wanna try and turn it over if i look at it. Id rather oil the cylinders for a week and let them penetrate from the top down. Id use this for ~ 4 acres to plow / disc / seed for my bee farm pasture. Id really like a diesel and to be honest, the 856, at 10k lbs is probably a bit too big. So yay or nay for 2k on the moline? any advice and prep to start after 30 years? Is this a reliable tractor all things considered? Ill try and post a few pictures. It also has duals on the back.

If anyone wants to discuss it im fine with text or call too. 5139073095. Im mechanically inclined I own 5 diesels now. I do the work on everything, Just not familiar with MM. I want something that can be used not really looking to do a full restore that I have to rebuild the engine

Thanks
Phil

At the very least you can count on a injector pump rebuild. No way i would pay that without knowing the engine was not seized. But, that is only my thinking.30 years is a long time even under a dry shed. New tires if dry rotted are big money also. A smaller diesel tractor would be good for your size ground and not cost a lot more. To each his own. My opinion.

Looks pretty straight, missing the grill. Does the clamp on go with it?

He didn't mention anything about it, but to be honest Im not sure what the clamp on is lol

He means the clamp on duals leaning against it.

MM diesels seldom stick tough. Be prepared for Ampli-torq rebuild/motor. Poor power steering. One here would be a 4-500 $ tractor.
Suspect tach doesn't work. Looks like way more than 3k hours!

If diesel I would want to se it run. As
others said 30 years is a long time to be
setting.

that condition would be 500 bux? im trying to gauge what fair price is. he said someone he talked to suggested 3k is fair. I would not give that much tho

Bought M5 which is basically same tractor with 3pt and in pieces for 200$. Had to rebuild motor/pto and hydraulic pump. Now a good
tractor. Would struggle to get 4k for it and I know what I got!

What state are you in? Location makes a big difference. Around here, south-central MN that would be a $600-$800 tractor if the engine is stuck, $1200-$1500 maybe if it turns over. $2000-$2500 running. I think $3000 would be a struggle running unless it is a really nice, right, clean tractor that is field ready.

I appreciate all the feedback! Ive beem looking more and more for used ones to try and gauge $$

So the more I research the MM the more I think I wanna get one, regardless of the M602. Just out of curiosity, is this a fair price for the G1000?

On Top of the description, the engine was overhauled 500 hrs ago. I might have to just bite the bullet and buy something field ready, i don't know yet tho. If I run into a lot of issues with the 602 I could approach the price maybe of the G1000, especially if he is negotiable. at that point, would probably be better off. Plus the more I think about it, I think $1200 might be the most I will go on the M602. maybe.

So I went and looked at the tractor. He told me it has not ran in 30 years, as a guess. He also said he dad passed in 2006 and his dad used it up to that time. Looking at it, I dont think its been 30 years, I just dont think he is really putting 2 and 2 together. I looked in the fuel tank, the diesel looked OK. No algae nothing cloudy no odd smells. Pulled the dipstick, oil looked good. No sludge or anything odd. The tractor rolls fine. Its dirty of course, but nothing is really dry rotted either, even the tires. The eyelets in the 3 point even spun fine, I thought for sure if anything was froze up, they might be the 1st to do it. Only issue is the seat and I have no idea how to operate it. I tried to open the hood, but it looks like you have to remove the muffler? is that the case? I ordered a manual to read over. The guy is more principal than anything. He doesn't need the money I can tell, he doesn't want someone to buy it just to try and flip I dont think and he stressed the fact the he appreciated me looking at (and driving 2 hrs) before I tried to low ball him on the phone. I told him while i was there i was interested, but with the unknowns I wasn't sure if I Could spend much more than 1k on it and he didn't bat an eye. I might read over that manual and then maybe offer him 1200 or so. I really believe it hasn't been 30 years though after seeing some things that have sat 30 years. He has the air breather and the grill, they just were not on. The duals had great tread on them. I think a fluid change and cleaning might be good....
