Got a u moline with a mag on it, should I hear an impulse click when cranking with starter? It starts when pulling it but will not start with the starter. It has
150 lbs. compression, rebuilt carb, but will not start with stater. Have fire at plugs but does not start even with starting fluid. Can pull it just two or three
feet and starts, any info is appreciated.

I would check the impulse mag timing a d lag angle if applicable. I believe you are on the right track.

Manifold? Manifold gaskets? Sounds like the starter is too slow for air/fuel mixture to draw in because air is coming in from outside the manifold/carb system. In other words the necessary vacuum is not happening at the speed of the starter.

The mag shouldn't "click" when using the starter. The engine spins fast enough that it doesn't need the impulse. if you want to check anyway, use a hand crank. When using the starter, try running a wire from the battery positive to the coil positive & see if it starts. If the spark is weak (also, does the spark plugs get wet when using starter?)& put under pressure in the cylinder, it may not be sparking because the starter is drawing all the juice to it. Also check timing (when you pull start, does it run right?) & all electrical connections, even where the negative cable bolts to the chassis. If it gets the right spark & right fuel mix at the right time, it will start.

You should hear the impulse when hand cranking or using starter.

Likely a broken spring or worn paws or post.

It runs good when running, starter spins it pretty good, I think I will go after the mag and have it checked out and check the intake gaskets as suggested and see what happens, thanks for all the info.
