Model r timing gear

Engine still in tractor. Is it possible to take front end of the engine apart and drive the gear off from through the side cover. Gear is all chewed up

You mean crankshaft gear? Never seen one bad. Terrible job. Crank has to be pulled out back. Has big roller bearing on front of crank. Gear behind.

There is no front engine cover on an R engine. The crankshaft must come out the back of the engine. There is a roller bearing between the timing gear and front of engine case.

No, to replace the front roller bearing or timing gear, the crank must come out the back of the engine. Even the roller bearing goes in from inside the engine, but crank must be removed first.
