I could just kick myself!

On another sight there was a U with the PTO clutch for sale, and I didn't buy it and now unhappy because it would have saved my sorry carcus lots of climbing on and off a newer tractor when chopping and bagging silage.

Guess I never knew that MM had that option on the U, would have been so nice to take one step on and off at least 4 times while unloading a load.

SO anyone know of another one for sale? Or a working rear half with a non running engine?

TIA.

Have few here in MB Not an easy job to add if you have drum brakes. Bull pinion has to be changed.

You don't need a U with Live PTO to do stationary work. Just get one with a regular PTO and hand clutch (prior to UB) and use the hand clutch to engage/disengage the PTO with trans in neutral. Live PTO only has benefits in a moving operation like baling for example where you want to stop forward movement without stopping the baler. Moline's live PTO in the late U/UB is spring loaded so you must hold the lever back to disengage tractor motion. It does not stop the PTO from turning.

Like BMG1 said, get a U with a hand clutch. You can just walk up to the tractor from the front, on the right side, and operate the clutch from the ground. You don't even need to get close to the PTO shaft. Very handy on stationary PTO work.

We all make mistakes but those clutch units can be a pain to repair and parts a little hard to find. Very desirable to have except for pulling as they slip.

As much as I like my Minnies, I'd stay away from the live PTO on a U. They are OK but as has been said, they tend to slip under a hard pull. That's because they are in a location prone to oil leakage and the fact that the clutch involved is applied at a location of increased torque. To repair one is expensive if you can even locate the parts. That's why the majority of them that you find have been welded shut. Great idea and probably worked well when new, but there are better solutions out there for sure.

I am not even sure it was a great idea. Was the differential on them U fitted with needle roller bearings? I do not think the diff can last a lot if you were to keep it "unclutched" for a period of time in a higher gear.

Years ag, lots, I had a U with the live PTO setup. Was told at that time it was made for a UB and as it was when put on a U then the disk brake no mater how heavy you were you could not put enough pressure on it to know you were even trying to use it to turn or stop. Never got to try the PTO out as the drawbar sat so high and we could not find a way to lower it the baler hitched to the tractor and pickup as low as it would go was still at least 3" off the ground. Only had that tractor 2-3 months.
