Pertronix for my UTU

My grindermixer/yard dog UT is running poorly and would like to change over to Pertronix ignition in hopes to improve starting and performance. I have made it 12v negitive ground to keep it simple.

Can someone with experence with this give the correct part numbers for coil, wires, ignition and a MM YT aproved place to purchase.

Thank you!

I would get it running on quality points before going to Pertronix. Pertronix will improve plug firing but will not cure other ills.

When you converted to 12 volt negative ground did you swap wires on the coil? + now goes to ignition switch and - goes to side of distributer. I have seen first hand evidence on a UTU, UB and Jet Star 3 that it does make a difference.

It does make a difference on the coil. As I said above electronic ignition won't cure any problems it'll just improved Spark unless of course it's running poorly due to distributor wear or something along those lines.

You may need to get the number off the distributor before you can order the correct Pertronix kit to fit it.

I've changed a few of my old MMs to Pertronix with good results.

I found this in my notes

Ignitor 1142 Delco 4 cyl CW rotation 12 Volt Neg ground U, UB and others

Ignitor 1143 is CCW version 445, 4 Star and others

Check with Pertronix before ordering 909-547-9058 If you go by lookup in catalog it will show a number for positive ground from the factory.

I would recommend a direct 12 volt no resistor required coil such as NAPA IC14SB or equivalent. You don't need a high power coil.

Well I see one problem with my poor running U and that is I never reversed the + and - wires on the coil when I changed the battery ground. I questioned the wiring when I went to replace the old coil because the top was cracked.

UB Owner's Operation and Maintenance Manual S-163 page 4, and Shop Maintenance Manual S-181 page 3 both affirm that firing order is 1-3-4-2

I checked my 53 UBU the plug wires are definitely 1-3-4-2 clockwise on the distributor cap and the rotor definitely turns clockwise when engine cranks.

I wonder why they are opposite?

My bad! The UB rotor does indeed turn CLOCKWISE. Not CCW. Sorry for the error. I just went out now to double check it.
