Moline R governor

What is the common cause for racing? I have the governor on the bench, everything seemingly OK, except for the usual slop. The external linkages all work freely and have not been modified. What say you all?
Thanks
Curt

I'll dig deeper to figure that out but it's as if the cure would be to shorten that link between the gov and the carb, that is, the gov functions but it's as if it can't reach. I think if it's a Farmall A, I'd get away with shortening the link from the gov to the carb but it's a Minnie and there's no nice way to shorten that link. If I disassemble it do you think I would find either that bushing or the pins or the ball all worn out?
Thanks Del,
Curt

What usually worked for me was to take as much end play out of the shaft as possible. (It shows shim washers in the parts book. I think you shim the flyweight end of the shaft, not the gear end, but its been a while since I worked on one.) The pins in the flyweights were usually pretty worn.Replace them. A grade 8 bolt turned down will work for a while. Sometimes the round block the pins went into was worn at the ball end. There was one where the cup on the other side of the ball was worn as well. And of course, put a bushing in the housing for the arm to pivot in.

Usually you can put a little bend in that link. It will bow out a little but the distance between the two ends will be shorter.

I just grab another governor. Z same. Never seen one race unless someone has been in to it or rod binding or length changed.

Curt: Take the cover plate off the bottom. Usually the greatest wear is where the spindle rod hooks into the short arm on the gov shaft to the carb. along with worn bushings on that shaft. This makes for very slow gov reaction and lost motion. The weights have a very short stroke to move the spindle and when you get excessive lost motion from wear in different areas it cannot move the carb. shaft the full travel in both directions.

Thanks Del. I'm going to take the half-A approach, shorten the rod between the governor and carb to see if that has the desired effect. If it does, I'll know it's a matter of slop in the system so to speak. Then, if I'm ambitious I'll undertake to correct the problem the right way. Waiting on some parts from Welters before I get back into it.
Thanks Del,
Curt

I took the one off my neighbors R and built the worn parts up with a acetylene torch and brass. Seemed to fix the problem.
