445 PTO shaft

I split the 445 tractor to replace the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. Found out that my PTO shaft splines are bad. How hard is it to replace the shaft and all I need to do to replace the shaft? Thanks in advance for your time.

Is that in a diesel? They tend to be hard on the splines in the clutch area-the engine knocking and all.

If those splines are that bad I would think the adapter in the flywheel is pretty much done too. I am thinking it was softer than the shaft. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I am thinking that you can pull that shaft out the back after the hydraulic pump and all the shaft coupplers are removed. I only did it on a Big Mo 400 and it had a non-standard pump on it.

I have a 5 Star that the PTO shaft looked about like that 30 or 40 years ago & it is still running. I did put some very good moly grease on it long ago & it didn't look any worse a couple years ago than it did when I first saw it.

I would consider those splines worn severe enough to replace. When buying a used shaft, 50% splines remaining will probably be as good as you will find. To remove the shaft, you must remove the hydraulic unit, disassemble the PTO clutch, remove the hydraulic pump, then remove the shaft out the back of the tractor.
