M5 hard to get in gear.

Rebuilt a M5 diesel and works fine except gear shifting. Hard to get into any gear. Clutch seems to work fine once you get it in gear. Our M5's in 60's would always grind going into gear. This one is worse and intermittent. Bad pilot?

You said you rebuilt the tractor, did you replace the clutch?

If not, my first thought would be clutch plate sticking on clutch shaft splines and /or warped clutch plate. Once you get it in gear and use it, then stop, take it out of gear but leave your foot on the clutch, can you get it back in gear without it clashing teeth?
You might reduce the clutch free travel to create more distance between flywheel and pressure plate. But as you know you must have some free travel. Also putting it in high range night help to put more drag on the shaft.

When replacing clutch I always put a coating of anti-seize on clutch shaft splines, to keep the plate free to slide on the shaft.

You might be able to remove the bottom cover and with a long spout (straw) on your favorite rust remover and a snake light, be able to spray some juice on the splines on the back side of the plate. Don't over due at one time so it don't run out on the linning.
