ZTU shift Lever

I am working on a total restoration of a 1937 ZTU. The gear shift lever was stuck pretty good. After removing the transmission cover, lots of penetrating oil and a little work, I got it freed up but the shift lever is really sloppy in the transmission cover. In fact The lever will move up and down about 1/8". I mean really sloppy. I know there are no bearings or even bushings supporting the lever. The shift lever on my 46 Z fits just fine (By the way, seen in Antique Power Jan/Feb 2018). I don't know yet whether the cast cover or the shift lever is worn, maybe both. Does anyone have a suggestion as to a solution?

That is the shifter that goes in the side of the cover isn't it?
Could the cover be bored and a bushing installed that fits the lever as close as is possible on a worn lever?

yes you can put bushings in the cover. I have done it to 2 of mine, I also redid the shifter with stainless steel and put a boot over the end where it slides.

I have a cover off a 1939 I would sell. Don't know where you are located? i am in northern Ill.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I am in California so shipping is a long ways. I am thinking I can fine another cover out here, however another cover does not necessary mean a non worn bore. I am thinking I will try the bushing route.
