got a bit more done on the m-5 today, still waiting on the snap rings for the power steering caps. installed all the hydraulic hoses for the 2 remotes, put the tank and levers back on, installed the electrical plug, and the rebuilt draw bar brackets and draw bar. the draw bar is now sitting center on the tractor not off to one side from the old bent broken side brackets. installed the manifold, it's nice to be finally putting it back toghter  third party image third party image

working on the m5 today, retorqued the heads, reset valves @ 12 and 18, resealed the power steering, ran in to an issue with the snap rings that hold the end plates in place. I believe they are original and a lot of wear on them with ridges that are quite pronounced, the end plates will be loose using the old ones so will order new ones tomorrow morning. have been working along prepping and painting. got the hood, fenders, tool box and fuel tank left to prep and paint. I should start reassembly this week (now where did that go??) some pics of the progress. third party image third party image third party image third party image third party image third party image third party image

good evening all a few weeks back bob lee from Kansas put a post on about cleaning up a farm site, he picked up a case tractor and a really cool old wagon among other things he mentioned finding a Minneapolis Moline manifold brand new that had been thrown in the metal dumpster! bob climbed in and retrieved it. this turned out to be new old stock and fit my m5, a few messages and emails back and forth, a couple of phone calls and I sent bob the money, he shipped from Kansas on april 13th and it arrived here this afternoon! bobs shipping and packaging skills ensured it arrived in one piece in great shape! thank you bob, i'm going to be putting this manifold on miss minne and the manifold I got from stieners will go in the box for the rebuild on miss minne's sister! it is things like this that make y.t. such a great site, guys like bob going that extra mile (and a little dumpster diving) are what make it work for all of us. thanks again bob. third party image third party image

got some work done on the side panels under the hood today, welded up the cracked out bolt holes (vibration cracks) straightened the divots and wrinkles out of them. the 2 small panels by the fuel tank where nasty little buggers to get straight again! got them sanded down and prepped and primered. third party image third party image third party image third party image third party image

built a new power plug box for the back of the m5 (missing) and installed 5 pin trailer plug, (original was a 2 pin) the original was live from a 20 amp fuse on the dash, I will have one live circuit the same and one off a switch on the dash for lights. I plan on building a set of lights on magnets like the tow truck drivers use for towing vehicles and have them ready for my disc or cultivator if i'm coming home in the dark. also going to have a smv sign and dot reflector tape on the back of each, i'll be sticking to county back roads not out on any main highways but I still want to be SEEN  third party image third party image third party image

Erick brought the new side brackets and slide plate for the draw bar assembly, we installed them and test fitted everything, fits right on, the side brackets were built of wider angle iron and a plate added to beef them up. and so the bolt holes were not so close to the edge. ground the corners of the new brackets round so I don't cut my head or arms open sliding under the tractor  third party image third party image third party image third party image
the old brackets for comparison

another to do project on the long list  the power steering is leaking from both ends!! I went to the city today for welder parts, and just for giggles I stopped at the agco dealer (used to be selmac sales) and asked laura at the parts counter about the seals and gaskets for the m5 power steering, gave her the numbers for the m5, a couple of clicks on the computer she had the diagram for the power steering up, checked off the parts we need 2 more clicks she said yes no problem will be here in a week!! sweet! so doing some quick thinking I asked about the 3 rad hoses? 2 more clicks, yes will be here next week! sweet! so I asked about the 3 1" rubber 90's under the hydraulic tank? yes will be here next week!! laura told me she can get Moline parts easier and quicker than allis or massey (their brands!) I was very surprised and very happy :D third party image third party image third party image third party image

so if you own a Moline and need parts give agco and they just might surprise you

took the manifold off, large hole in it! used my nutcracker so I wouldn't break or bend up the manifold studs. the nutcracker splits the nuts open so you can just take them off with your fingers, and not wreck the threads. third party image third party image third party image

got the hydraulic control levers off and hoses and lines disconnected pulled the tank out, found 2 brackets for the charlyn valves laying in the muck in the bottom. one bracket was broken, cleaned everything up and the valves look ok, cleaned up the one good bracket and put it back on the bottom of the valve. those brackets hold the valve steady so they are not flopping all over (that's why the hydraulics were not responding like they should) now got to find another bracket and we will be good to go.
third party image third party image third party image third party image third party image third party image third party image

got the hydraulic tank cleaned up, took the filter out of the tank and cleaned it up (was actually pretty clean.) sanded and primed some pieces, levers, piping.

good evening unc, the m5 is coming, worked today on the throttle linkage, took the arm plates off the govenor and welded all the worn spots back up to level,(stich and go with mig) put a narrow shim washer in the throttle linkage plate to take up the slop, straightened the rod and now when you move the throttle lever the governor is moving. the sae-200 model # was used for welders built for the military, and export with different engines than the f-162 or 163 continental flathead. also different weld control and wiring. good machines they where basically a sa-200. and that's why they weld so nice unc. you have a keeper there.

Good morning CMF. The M5 is coming nicely. I've had a similar situation with my favourite U model. Fortunately, the drawbar and associated parts are made from off-the-rack materials. With the help of a parts manual, replacement parts were easy to fabricate. Nice new painted parts sure clean up the back end.
I've been following your progress on the hydraulic setup. My GVI is in about the same shape, so one of these days, I'll have to start on that.
Unrelated question- what is the difference between a Lincoln SA-200, and an SAE-200? My good old welder uses a MH Chrysler engine on an SAE-200. No idle kick down, it runs at a constant speed, and has the dual continuous control set-up. An oldie but goody. unc

removed the tin work off the tractor, then pulled the bent up draw bar assembly off, found out why it was all bent up! the first owner had taken the draw bar out and installed it upside down?? why I don't know but (mabe to lower it for some implement?) being upside down it was putting upward force on the side brackets and slide plate bending and splitting them  so will need new side brackets and straighten the slide plate. third party image third party image third party image third party image third party image

draw bar pin had an S bend form the draw bar not being square to the pin. sent the side brackets and slide plate to ericks for him to build 2 new side brackets and straighten slide plate. I built new draw bar pin and lock plate primed and painted. third party image third party image third party image

after sitting most of the winter finally get a spot cleared out in the shop and got started on the rebuild. in the meantime I had gone out and got miss mine's sister (40 serial #'s apart) and a 24t j.d. baler , this one is not running so went out with a tandem roll back hooked up the m5, drove over to the baler rolled the m5 back hooked up the baler and home.

got the m5 home, ran it around a bit to warm it up, drove it in the shop and pulled the drain plug on the oil pan and went to bed! that was a long day. next day finished the oil change, new oil filter, cleaned and changed oil in the air cleaner, greased and went out the back and hooked up the j.d. 336 baler and brought it up to get ready for the 2nd. hay cutting. third party image third party image

after getting miss mine and the baler ready we went to work! baled a 155 bales in 45 minutes, the m5 is one smooth baling tractor and a pleasure to drive, the live pto, amplitorque tranny and torque to no end make baling a breeze.
third party image third party image third party image

during this time I get started on the restoration part, went out to westlock tractor parts (made a few trips) picked up 4 used 18.4 x34 firestone tires in nice shape and 1 front steering tire in nice shape. the rims where the start of this restoration

went out the next week with a gallon of atf, pulled the plugs and poured a quart into each cylinder. looked the tractor over and made a list of items i'd need to get her running?? 4 weeks later went back and got started, pulled the roof and panels off blew out 20 years worth of poplar leafs, twigs, nests, cobwebs and fuzz! changed out the plugs, plug wires, most of the wiring harness,(rotten and dozs of splices) new choke cable, new battery, new fuel line and filter. Harold took the carb into work and rebuilt it, poured in 10 gallons of premium fuel with a little 2 cycle oil in it. Harold climbed up on the seat hit the starter and she was running on the 1st revolution!! third party image

Harold had to cut it out of the trees  third party image

first time she rolled under her own power in 20 years, Harold at the wheel
third party image third party image
I just had to take her for a spin :D third party image
loading up to go to her new home! the trip home was a little slow with all the weight on the back the trailer wanted to fishtail so kept it down below 50 mph.

draw bar day, pulled out the draw bar, the side brackets that hold the swing plate and sent the side brackets with my buddy to build me new ones, (he has a 50 ton press) and straighten the draw bar plate that has the roller on it to swing side to side. I built new c plate for up in the end draw bar holder, and new draw bar pin, cut and welded plates on the end of the draw bar to bring it back up to level, was worn down into the draw bar about a 1/4" on each side from implements and the first owner flipping it upside down! some pics of todays work. third party image third party image third party image third party image
