Our GB propane we were using on an auger last fall when the starter started acting up and it wouldn't turn over right. I finally got around to pulling it off to find the end broken off where it is supposed to support the bendix gear bushing. I am replacing the bendix but I need the end piece that's broken. Anyone have one of these? I don't need a starter, this one turns it over great until this broke. It has numbers stamped into it "937354" but I'm not sure if there is any more ahead of these numbers as that's where it broke. Also, the piece that broke off must be down in the flywheel housing somewhere, I suppose I need to locate and remove that too.

You hit the nail on the head.Reengaging the starter too soon after a misfire is what always breaks the nose cone. That is why MM put a decal on the back of the fuel tank "
do not reengage starter for 30 seconds after first attempt if engine does not start" You probably fractured the nose cone at that time, but it held together till now. I can furnish you with a new nose cone. But you better check your armature to make sure the shaft is not bent.

What does the whole starter look like?

Where are you located? Is this the kind that has a single conical end bolt that holds it in place?

Howard

We are in South east ND. The starter bolts onto this with the two long bolts that go through the starter and then this collar slides into a tight fitting hole in the housing and one pointed bolt holds it in place. I could take a picture but I have the starter apart now. It is like a U MM starter only bigger.

If you can find the missing piece, you may be able to V it out and weld it back together. Had a Corvair that used a multi piece flywheel that was rivited together. When the rivits get worn the starter teeth would get offcenter and snap starter snouts. Welded several and used the starters for years. With a new flywheel, that is.

If you haven't already done so, check with a starter/alternator shop. They might be able to order you a new one. Also, I am thinking its possible you have too much end play in the armature shaft and that is why it broke.

That could be, I'll check that. I thought once a couple of years ago I sort of jammed it by hitting the start button again after it had disengaged and heard a little gear clashing sound, after that it always worked but didn't sound smooth like before, I thought something must be going on with it but we hadn't started it only a few times a summer. I thought maybe someone had an old bad starter laying around that they may sell the end off of.
