I was dragging my driveway a few weeks ago with my 1945 RTU when suddenly it began backfiring and the engine quit. It will not restart, but just keeps backfiring as it turns over. I'm assuming maybe something is going on inside the mag? I can hear the impulse tripping as it turns over. I haven't done anything else to it yet. I really don't know my way around mags too well, and I was just wondering if anyone else has any ideas, or what I should try first.

If it is a fair banks type mag send me an e-mail and I can maybe send you a manual for that mag. There are a number of types but I have 2 manuals for the common two mag used on many old tractors. All it will cost you is a little time

I had a mag. on a Z strip the distribuitor gear because the shaft it turned on froze in its bushing.

Another thing that may have happened, since you said it started backfiring and then quit, the drive pin in either the oil pump drive gear or the magneto coupling at the top of the oil pump shaft may have sheared.

either senario put the engine out of time.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Old--my mag is a Faibanks Morse type 4B. If you have any info on that I would appreciate it. My email is [email protected]

t.r.k.---the idea of timing had also occurred to me, based on what it did.
My original thought was that one of the rocker arms had come loose and was holding one of the valves open. That had happened once before, but this time they were fine.
I guess the next step is to tear into it and see what's going on. I wasn't sure where to start looking. I appreciate your thoughts. Now I at least have a starting point.
