Praire Gold Paint

I was looking throught a nnalert tractor parts book and seen that they list praire gold paint. I was wondering if anybody has used this paint and how close it matches? Or is there a better place to get praire gold paint.

Don't buy it! synthetic enamel it will not hold up a year. They use to have a decent paint that would alst a few years but what they have now is not, its between the Prarie gold #2 and #3 in shade, its not even the right color. If its a work tractor you maybe happy with it but if your spending alot of time on it and want it to last go to Napa and buy the Crossfire they have a tractor color chart PG#1 is at the top(36-38 year tractors) and PG#2 is the next on the card the correct wheel color is availabe also. They have it in enamel and urethane. Its not cheap but it really holds up.

I agree.

We use Napa crossfire paint on just about everything we paint. We painted a couple of trailers with some leftover paint. They sit outside and hold up well in the Texas sun.
Not the cheapest, but worth the money.

I don't recommend the nnalert paint or paint sold my TSC. It's Ok if you don't mind fading and if you're going to paint with a brush but beyond that, it's not good. I bought a gallon a couple of years ago and still have three quarts left, I just couldn't use it.

I just painted my GVI with acrylic enamel from www.tractorcolor.com and was very pleased with it. I did use NAPA thinners in it also. I ordered it online and was very pleased with the service. They offer all tractor colors in enamels, urethanes, and base coat/clearcoat.
I was very happy with the way this paint covered and flowed out.

Is the paint from tractor color synthetic? Just bought some pg 3 and metalic bronze for my gvi and fixin to paint in couple weeks. will it hold up you think? It is made by Valspar which I heard was supposed to be a good quality paint.

cameronz77, they do offer a synthetic paint which is their lowest grade of paint but still good for a working tractor. Try to use hardner in it if you can. Next best is acrylic enamel, then the urethanes, and the best show finish would be the base coat/ clear coat system.
hope this helps, NOHOG

Check out the Sticky on paint info in the forum at Minneapolis-Moline.com, there is a lot of useful info that took quite a bit of time to put together. RW

I work at a NAPA store and used the urethane paint and it turned out very very well. the nnalert paint does fade if left out side for very long. I mixed the Prairie gold myself and it is a perfect match i would have to say. i was going to buy the nnalert paint but they didn't have any in gallons so i waited for a week and a half and when the stock truck came in they didn't have a single gallon on it after they said that it would. I would recommend the NAPA paint.

Nathan,

I am wondering if you will send me the NAPA mixing code. I have a store in my town and am planning to buy a gallon of their Urethane.

Valspar (also owned Minnesota Paints) which c0ompany manufactured paint for MM when they were in business--the main office is still in Mpls.

Nathan and others with interest in MM paint codes:

I used a full gallon of the paint mixed by Midwest Paints formulated for the MM paint committee, on my MM UT chassis. I was not satisfied with the coverage by this paint, three coats and still showing primer through it. it was almost transparent. I talked to Larry at Midwest Paints and he said that is what you get with this mixture. You have to use a lot of it to cover cast properly. I went to NAPA and had them mix a gallon of paint using the color code # 3749 suggested by Nathan.

They are not the same color however:

The steering bolster etc. are painted with Midwest Paint, and the grill is painted with NAPA # 3749. Actually, the picture doesn't show the greater variance between them that your eye does in person.

Actually, I like the NAPA color better than Midwest Paint. That means I will have to strip down the chassis and haul it outside and repaint it with the NAPA paint.

Anyone have similar experiences?
