Problem with 1949 UTU Governor (Wont idle back down)

Hey, I am working on my 1949 UTU with the KEF, We have a new Manifold on it (One piece). It fired right up, and was running great till we opened it up a little more, then it just takes up building up faster and faster, then we closed it back to where the idle should be but the carb dropped all the way except enough to bring it back down I can push it down with my finger but it won't go back down. Then I shut it down and lifted up the lever between the Governor and the carb and dropped it all the way down it wasn't binding, but as soon as I fired it back up the Governor wanted to lift up the lever. How do I fix this, and how do these Governors work, Oil Pressure? Thanks Mike

Open your email and I will send you the governor adjustment pages from the service manual. It starts on page 52. It explains in there how to adjust the linkage of the carb./governor and it has to be pretty close to work right. That is what I have found in the past.... JB

If you put a one peice manifold on it ( M5 perhaps) It is a different height than the original. You will have to have a different length rod. Most people go to an adjustable rod like the later tractors with threads on one end.

Wouldnt the rod be to short also when the engine is shut down? Cause it is fine when it is shut down but its only when it running, Mike

When the tractor is shut down and the throttle is pushed back to the rear, or idle position the governor arm will travel loosly up and down much farther than the range of governor action. Follow the instructions he sends you and it will work as ment to. Basicly unhook one end of the rod, with the throttle in the open (fast) position and the throttle shaft in the carb against the stop in the open position the free end should line up with the hole. This is basic setting for all governors on any engine. adjust then check it out with rod in hole you will have to over adjust as the rod will change length in distanct from gov to carb as it swings into the hole.
