175 Charging problems

Hey all,

Does anyone have Big Dean"s wiring schematics saved on their computer handy, I can"t access the link anymore. I can"t get my 175 to charge. As I recall, I wired it as pictured, however, the ammeter only shows discharge, never charge. Newly rebuilt alternator and AGCO regulater. I suspect the alternator, because when when "full fielded" it only reads 12.5 volts, and I suspect thats from the battery. Took it back to the shop, they tested it again and said "No problem, it works fine, just a low output alternator by design. If I can recheck the wiring with the schematic one more time, I think I"ll take it to another shop to test.

No it's not, Jeff. After researching more in the archives, I think the harness I'm using has something backwards. Hopefully someone will post a diagram for a 175 diesel, I can't hardly read the one in my manual. thanks for the help.

Hello!

Are you having an alternator or a generator? You say you have an external regulator, which confuses me. Generator is the one with commutator and brushes, alternator uses diodes to make direct current.

If you have an alternator, have you tried running the engine up to speed? Some alternators need rather high rpm"s before they start charging.
Also, how is the excitation wired on the regulator? You need to supply a small excitation current to the alternator, when the engine is running. The battery idiot light in a car is just for this purpose, to get the alternator going.

If you have a generator, then i can offer no help. I have 2 tractors, and both had generator problems before. How i fixed them? I just converted them to use alternators and no problems ever since :)

12.5Volts with engine running means, you"re not charging.

Great to hear from you Big Dean!!! We've all been wondering how you're doing. Please give us an update. We missed you. Dave
