Annoying new parts

I put a new fuel shut off valve on my UK 135 and also the line that goes to the primer pump. The parts were MF Heritage line and the fuel line was made in the UK. You'd think it should be just like original. The fitting was slightly oversize for the 1/2 inch wrench that was supposed to fit it. I took a pipeline file and filed my stubby wrench enough that it would go on the fitting. I tightened it as much as I could in the limited space I had to work but I think it still has a slight leak. The brass ferule is supposed to seal against the seat on the valve but if it doesn't, what can you do to stop the leak? Also, has anyone else ever had fittings that were oversize for the proper wrench size? Of course the problems had to be on the hardest fitting to get at. Dave
 
The old original fittings fit fine. I didn't have a 13 mm stubby wrench but if I remember right 13 mm and 1/2 inch are the same. Maybe a 13 mm is a few thou. bigger though. Still kind of frustrating when your out in the boonies trying to fix something. Dave
 
David. sometimes a few tightly twisted wraps of teflon tape
(around the front of ferrule) will do just fine( in a pinch) However, it is always best for these types of connections (ie: hoses carrying fuel and gases, corrosives and other such products) to fit and seal as they were meant to! So do this only to get it in for proper repair. We would kinda miss ya around here! Les
 
It must have been metric fittings. Seems wierd but maybe only UK models sent to Canada had standard fittings and they only sell the metric ends? I'll be able to see if it's leaking today when I go out there. It's diesel so it's not as critical as a gas leak but is a magnet for dust and dirt. I'll see what I can do if it still leaks. Maybe some kind of gasket material that works for diesel would fix it. Dave
 
Dave, I've had some sucess with leaks around these fittings, by fitting a small "O" ring over the brass olive and "sandwiching" between the olive and nut. Don't over-tighten at first, just firm will do. Check for leaks. If a small leak is still evident, tighten the nut a fraction more, and re-check.
