M1, M2, etc... in part numbers

All of our Massey Ferguson equipment has M1, M2, etc... in the casting numbers. I've often wondered what these numbers mean. The parts guy at the local dealer says he doesn't know. Does anyone here know what they mean?

The M1....M2...Indicates a material change in the part. the design has not change just the material they use to make it...

Also the M1-M2-M3 etc means a part consisting of
(one part). M91-M92 etc,etc means an assembly.
At least two or more parts to form a complete
part or a kit of multiple numbers. Chuck
