Hello just picked up a massy harris 44 a week ago and am hoping to bring it back to its former glory. First question I have is there a reliable website/location that ships to Canada. Secondly it currently wines at start up with a fully charged battery.(although I didn't load test it) the starter looks like its been removed and at least been painted before reinstalled. and finally when I have had it running it only lasts for 10-15 minutes.
Things I've done.

New spark plugs

New gas

New belt

Cleaned carb

Thanks.

There are issues with new condensers from china. Numerous different kinds of failure there. I had a strange thing happen to me on my Case. I had put a new ignition switch and solenoid on my tractor. Started it one day and walked away with the tractor running. When I heard it die I came back. The starter was blazing hot and the battery was dead. I had noise suppressors on when I started it so i assumed the solenoid never dissengaged and the starter ran till the battery was out of juice.

It was time for a starter rebuild anyway. Got the starter back and all was good for a few minutes and then the solenoid engaged again. shut off the tractor and turned it to the on position and the starter immediately engaged again. Turned out my new switch was bad, somehow arcing from on to start when it got warm. Of course if your battery wasn't dead after your tractor died, that isn't the issue.

Had a tractor that would only run 15 to 20 minutes (not a Massey),and we had to
replace the intake manifold gasket. Seems it would get hot and not seal properly
and a leak between the manifold and block would occur. Have to wait a while before it would run again. Might try choking before it dies to see if a richer fuel mixture
would cause to run a bit longer. About the whining I have not suggestions. Hope
this guess helps.

Nice looking machine. The coil was pretty warm and that will be one 9f my next checks. Also took the starter off and triple checked it.

The fuel flow out the bottom of the carburetor is a steady stream.

Welcome, another Massey guy! The whine could be from dry bushings in the generator...add one or two drops of oil if it has an oil cup. Could also be the belt seats a bit differently as it warms up. As posted, the problem could be the coil.

Welcome fellow Massey Harris collector. Steve always has excellent advice follow it. The wine has me curious. Generator or alternator conversion?? Both could still wine even with a full battery. Also how hot is the coil after 15 minutes of running. I had a tractor once that had a wine and it turned out to be the belt. Someone had put an air cooled belt on it. Dont know why it wined but it was the belt. Enjoy that 44 they are great tractors. I have a few. Third Party Image

Welcome aboard. I don't understand the wine (whine?) part, so that will take a little better explaining. But I'd check the flow of gas out of the tank, through the carb first thing. Take the plug out of the bottom of the carb and gauge the flow. It should be steady, and not just a trickle. If it's a trickle, work your way back to the tank, starting at the fitting at the carb. Take the line off at the carb and check the flow coming out of the sediment bowl. If its better than a trickle, check for a plugged screen in the carb inlet. If that's still a trickle at the line, take the sediment bowl off the tank and check the flow out of the tank. You may have a screen up above the sediment bowl in the tank. That's usually where the crud packs up and stops the flow. Is your tank clean inside? steve
