Got a new to me MF 285 diesel. Bought a loader and installed it.
The loader is plumbed into the 2 remotes at the back of the tractor - It does not have a separate valve.
When I pull back on the left hydraulic lever the loader goes up as it should. When I push the lever forward it drops down until the bucket hits the ground. But it stops there, as if the lever is in a "float" position. There's no down pressure on the bucket.
Reverse the hoses, and then the loader will pick the front end of the tractor up. But the bucket will not raise up.
Any idea what's going on with it? I can get pictures of necessary.

Yup - That was it.
I wish I was skinnier and a bit more flexible. But I got a light under that shield so I could se the screw head. Tightened it up, and not the cylinders work as they should.
Thanks for the assist.

Glad you found it, and got it working. That valve has been used on lots of MF tractors since the mid 60s, and easy to switch back and forth for single and double action cylinders.

So maybe they're behind the holes in the cover that's above the hydraulic filter?

I'll look after work this evening.

Yup... If I recall screw is seated IN for double action, and OUT for single action cylinder use. I MIGHT have that backwards though as it's been a long time since I changed dad's 180 valve for his loader.

Here are a few thumbnailed pictures. I don't see any adjusting screws. Maybe they're under the cover?

The valve switch screws are behind the FRONT of the valve mount plate, lower smaller holes for a straight blade screwdriver to turn the screw on each side. Lightly seat screws either fully IN or OUT as needed.

Are you sure the cylinders are double acting cylinders?

They are, since the reversed hoses lift the tractor off the ground. I'll steel bet the valve switching screw needs turned.

Theres an adjustment screw on MF control valves, just under each spool. If I recall it is turned IN for double action cylinders, and OUT for single action cylinder use. Check the screw, and turn it opposite of where it is now.

Pictures of the how the valve/hoses are stetup would help, sounds like only one of the hoses goes to the control valve while the other is just a drain.
