I have a 1974 135 I am restoring, serial #9A198616,rear axle serial #10851, Left axle shaft 897 030 m2, right shaft 183 249 m2. Does not have diff. lock. I removed the axles to grease the bearings and check the preload which was too tight. when I reassemble the axles they bumped together with almost 5/8" gap with existing shims. Had .050 shims on right and .090 on left. If I add that many more shims my seals won't land properly. Wondering if I can grind off the inside end of the shaft of both shafts almost 5/16" and how true those ends need to be? Or am I missing something. have adjusted preload before on 35s and fords. 1100 hours on hourmeter.

Something's not right, did the tractor come with these axles? The parts book shows three axles for the non diff rear, 897 038 M91, 881 297 M91, and 185 389 M91, all have
different SPLINE lengths for the diff carrier side gears.

I can't figure out what has happened. my shafts are inset "a", 4&21/32. had a bunch of shims on left side. When I took wheels off both axles rolled the same way. only 1190 hours. I think its correct hours. Found 3 MF in a barn. 1 TO-35, 2 135s. He said this one used less. First one had 1600h when I got it running. Returned it to him and he gave me the other 2. HE can't remember any details. my spline gears look to be same length with a flash light from outside. Should have said carrier side gears look to be the same length.

did some measuring- my shafts are 3/4" longer than axel housing. side gears are about 2" wide, don't know that they change. you're correct something is wrong. probably going to try to shorten shafts.

yep something wasn't right-- I hadn't installed the brake backing plate. Tell my wife not forgetful, brain just full.
