MF 50 gas Review

I would like the pros and cons of the Massey Ferguson 50 gas tractor. Is there any common problem areas?

I have a Massey-Harris 50 which is the same tractor. It has been a very reliable tractor. I have owned it since 1988 and the only problem I have had is sometimes while shifting I will raise up on the shift lever causing the end of the shifter to raise up and come out of the shifting slots. This mostly when you are shifting into reverse. The fix for this is to take off the oil fill plug on top the trans and take a long screwdriver or rod and put the shift rails back in to neutral

I had that problem with a Farmall 560.. It was because the end of the shifting lever was worn. My mechanic welded s little extension on the shifter and I
never had another problem.

I was wrong about part of this fix. You still get to the fix through the oil plug but inside you will see the trans gears, just move them back into place with the long screwdriver or rod. Not hard to do.

Given the vintage of the Tractor......
A MF service manual should be mandatory.....

If and when the transmission becomes stuck in one gear and or the gear shift lever starts to move all over hells
half acre...here is what's inside the Transmission...

I have a '57 MF 50. I've used it for over 10 years now and found it all good except the sticking in gear issue. That's annoying but and easy fix thru the fluid filler hole. Parts are available and mine is economical on fuel. A Beware: if yours has the 2 1/2 inch lift cylinder, you cannot get a rebuild kit for the pump and if you get a new pump save the relief valve from you old pump. You cannot get a 2000 psi relief valve any more. Happy tractoring.

I have 2...both been in the family for decades. Nimble, reliable, comfortable. parts available. easy to repair. Starts easy in winter. Just use it within it's HP and work range and you will find it to be a great addition to your farm. I use mine to mow, grade roads, tedd hay, rake hay, pull a manure spreader, move wagons etc.

Got my first MF50 in 2005 and am now up to eight (although two are parts tractors). They run a seven foot finish mower, six foot snow blower, five foot brush hog, plus other utility uses. Great tractors.

When shifting, just push down a little on the stick as you change gears to prevent getting the gears stuck.
