202 Workbull Steering Column Seal Direction?

Back at it again on my 63 202 workbull. Whats the proper direction for this seal?

Hoping this round I can get it started without wearing my steering fluid. I tried swapping steering columns with a spare back end I've picked up but the damn thing is too short for the steering wheel attachment.

Thanks in advance!!

I put two of those in my 202 but it was so long ago that I don't remember which way they go now. But I did get the correct info here on the forum.

Notice I said I put two of them (at different times) in my 202. I also tried a speedy sleeve. The most it stopped leaking for me was like a week and a half. I sincerely hope you have better luck with yours.

I finally got rid of the whole thing and install a new modern unit from an off road custom shop along with a new steering column. That was about three years ago and it has been steering like a Cadillac ever since.

From what I can remember, it looks like your bottom pic is the correct way. Is there a spring going around the rubber on that side. From what I remember the rubber is angled on that side so when the oil presses against the seal, it makes the seal even tighter around the shaft. I hope someone will come along and back me up on this.

I have always ask myself which way is the fluid Im trying to seal and then put the lip
that way. Right or wrong thats what has always worked for me.

Take care

Top picture pressure side, bottom picture dust side. So the top should be the correct way.

You always put the spring to the lube/pressure side so it uses the pressure to help it seal, if you put it in backwards it will seal until there is enough pressure to overcome the spring.
