AD3 152 camshaft removal

Hello,

Just a simple question, I made an inframe rebuild some years on a AD3 152 diesel, so far so good no major issue.

I remembered the camshaft had wearing mark right on the cam actuating the fuel lift pump, but no issue so far.

Just thinking forward in time I ask if the camshaft can be slide out just [b:2fa5cbe1f0]keeping the engine block inframe and keep also the oil sump bolted[/b:2fa5cbe1f0]. In other wors I ask if the camshaft replacement can be done as follows:

Taking out the front axle with radiator / etc (As for below picture)
Removing the engine head (maybe not needed)
Removing timing gear case
Removing camshaft timing gear (prior to this I will align all the marks in the gears.
Remove fuel lift pump
Sleeve out the cam shaft

Thanks you

Oil pan and head can stay on with rocker arms removed and all tappets held up away from cam. I would not replace the cam until the lobe no longer moves the feed
pump lever. You can feel lever move with engine idling while holding the hand stroke lever.

Thank for answering. How can I know the tappers are away from the can? You mean holding the hand lever of the lift pumps that is normally used to bleed the circuit? Thanks

With the rocker arms removed pull up tappets, hold up with a clothespin, or hold two tappets up together with a heavy O ring around both tappets. Using the feed
pump hand prime lever you can feel the internal lever as it follows the cam lobe going up and down with engine idling.
