Remove and Replace Differential Oil Seal on Massey Harri

Hello, I'm new to the forum and I just got my first tractor. It was leaking oil out the brakes really bad so I removed everything through getting the brake drum of the pinion shaft. I have a parts manual and also found a shop manual online but there isn't much info on how to get the seal off. See image.

I'm thinking I need to take off the retainer first and it's somewhere behind that? But all the manuals show it right there on the tip of the pinion shaft.

Any help would be appreciated!

As moresmoke said on adding pictures. I was able to search and open yours it is below. YT has a limit on the length of your title so if you told what model you are working on in the title, we can't see it. It is best to always include the model and pertinent information in the body of your post.

Welcome to the world of equipment repair. The seal is in the retainer right around the shaft and would be a pretty basic repair. As for directions on changing it, you have to remember most equipment shop, service, technical manuals were/are written for dealer mechanics who have training and/or experience in equipment repairs. They are not written for the DIY market, as some auto manuals are, so do not include a lot of basic details. You will need to check bearing play or a new seal may fail. It looks like that seal could be pulled and changed without disturbing the holder, if the bearing is ok.

This actually helps quite a bit. I'm in the process of cleaning it all up in there (lots of oil gunk in
the brake drum housing) but I'll give it a shot at taking out the retainer and replacing that seal.
Someone was telling me it looks like a press fit and they could help press it out and the new one in if
needed.

Also, I didn't realize the title would get cut off but it's a model 30. When I was trying to add the
image, it kept giving me an error message that I had forbidden language (like cussing I guess?) and to
remove it before I could post. I guess that was because of the 5 post restriction you mentioned.
 

I think what you are calling a retainer is a bearing housing, not just a retainer for that seal. When you pull that housing, things are going to come with it. Study the info about the differential in your manual. I don't have a manual for your model, but from working on other machines I think it may tell you to remove the top cover and support that side of the differential before pulling that housing. The housing holds the bearing race as well as the seal. And shims between it and the main housing set the bearing clearance or pre-load. I believe the picture below is similar to what you may encounter in yours.

The bearing housing is installed with a stack of shims to
set the bearings and ring gear position. It is best not to
remove it if the housing itself is not leaking.



The seal can usually be pulled in the tractor. Usually a
sheet metal screw and a slide hammer will get it out. Or
sheet metal screw, vice grips and a right angle pry bar.
Once the seal is out, a new one can be driven in with a
piece of tubing of the proper size.



Also, however you replace the seal, wrap a piece of paper
around the brake shaft to keep the splines from
damaging the seal as it is slid on.
 
If that splined shaft can be wiggled back and forth, or in and out, you will probably need to pull the 6 bolts and what you are calling the retainer, to adjust the bearing play, and then replace the seal. As others have stated, there are shims behind the 'retainer', that are removed to take up excessive play in the tapered roller bearings. You need a good manual on how to do that, and you have to do both sides at once to get the gear lash correct. There is a bunch of help on this site that can step you through it, IF you can't find a good manual. I did mine a while back, and I'm old, so I don't remember what the manual told me, or how I did it exactly, but it was a back and forth with shims on both sides. Steve
