MH50 coolant leak question

Hi all,

I'm on to the next issue with this tractor. I had the bush hog on it recently and noticed that as I was cutting, there appeared to be what looked like steam coming out of the oil fill cap. Sure enough there was. I also noticed a little bit of coolant around the front of the engine but I couldn't see a leak. I had put a new thermostat gauge that's not working because the needle doesn't move. The manual says that you can get condensate in the crankcase if the thermostat is not functioning. I pulled that out and checked it some hot water and it functions properly.

Could a blown head gasket be causing this? The tractor runs great with the exception of this.

Thanks for the help.

Perform a Compression test on all cylinders..
Disconnect Battery..
Drain the Engine oil......
Verify if any coolant is evident from the engine oil pan drain over the next 24 hours..

Hi Bob,

Just did the compression test. Here are the results.

Cylinder 1 - 95
Cylinder 2 - 100
Cylinder 3 - 100
Cylinder 4 - 95

I also drained the oil and there are no initial signs of water. The oil in no way looked milky. It's only been a few hours since the initial oil change I did when I first got the tractor and if memory serves, there was no water in the oil during that change either.

It's normal for an older tractor to have a bit of blow by past the pistons. That blow by will look like steam coming from the oil fill or vent tube. If your radiator isn't going low and you don't have water in the oil pan, just look a different direction and that bit of blow by won't bother you.

Inspect the Engine vent ...verify NO blockage in Vent pipe # 46.

You could check the torque / retorque the engine HEAD bolts...

Thanks again for the info. I checked the vent tube and it was clear. I'll retorque the head bolts. After that I'll probably do what RM-MN said and just look the other way. I have checked the coolant level at different intervals and it wasn't down from what I could tell. For 70ish years old, I'd say it's doing pretty good.
