Massey 135 Engine Rebuild Questions.

Howdy, I m new to the tractor world and would appreciate some help with my now torn down engine! I do need a manual and or video about rebuilding it, especially if I should be looking for anything specific for wear or I should replace.

It s a Massey 135 I believe 1960s, Perkins AD3 152, 6 speed - 3 speed, reverse and high/low. Stamping in the block is 152ua 104476d other IDs on block are "e 29 8" and 37111500.

I took the crank and cam to a machine shop and they said the thrust bearing face was worn out on the crank, and while it would work- it wouldn t be right, but they did say the cam looked fine, really no wear or cause to resurface.

What engine rebuild kit with crank do I need?
Do I need to do the head studs?
Does this engine have cam bearings?
What 2 clutches and pressure plate do I need? It had the thin metal shim around the pressure plate - I plan to just clean up the flywheel.

Should I do anything else?
I was just planning to lap the valves, clean everything up, rebuild kit and put it back together with a new oil pump, I m not planning to remove the fuel injection pump or idler gear. I would like this to be an easy project and not a big mess, I appreciate any input, Thanks!

Don't have the answers to all of your questions, but ...

If you have the crank out it would be a good time to replace all of the main and rod bearings, including the thrust bearings. I have done a couple of Perkins engines where all of the main and rod bearings looked good but the thrusts were shot.

I have yet to take apart a Perkins where the cam needed work.

I re-use the head studs and nuts after very careful cleaning and measuring.

So you just need a kit with bearings, head gasket, gaskets and seals. No sleeves, rings, pistons, etc. needed (you said nothing about those).

If you are doing the clutch I would have the flywheel machined unless it measures up very close to spec.

The metal shims are called an air shield (or something like that), it is original and you need to put them back.

A lot of very good information on these fairly common engines is available on this forum and other places on-line. Pretty sure you can find PDF's of the service and parts manuals on-line for free too.

Good luck,
JP.

If that is a dual clutch read a manual before removing the pressure plate from the flywheel. Failure to install the bolts to retain the pto clutch pressure plate will cause damage.

Over size thrust bearings may be available to take up the end end play on the crank with worn thrust surfaces. May have to put then on a piece of flat
glass with fine sandpaper and polish them down to get proper end play.
