sooty plugs

I have a 1956 MF50 gas that I cannot get the carburetor working right. Right now it appears to be running too lean due to the soot on the plugs. Am I right to assume it is the carb? I have cleaned the carb, and all the seats several times over I even bough a rebuild kit and did that. But, I cannot get the tractor to run smoothly and with power. Points are hard to come by (those that are any good) so I changed the unit over to electronic ignition. But I had the problem before I changed the ignition over so I don't think that is the issue. Is it time to buy another carburetor? The tractor does not get much use and I think the wonderful gas is eating it up. Thanks for all the help everyone offers on this site.

+1 too rich
might need Distributor timing adjusted

I have an MF35 in the shop to fix three point hydraulics that when I get done there I'm going into the carb and timing. Plugs were fouled up they stopped igniting reliably and the tractor wouldn't start. Did the carb clean and rebuild. Pulled the plugs and oh my. Cleaned those up and started and ran fine. Burns a little oil too (compression is ok) so that's on the list after sorting out the fuel.

As said sooty plug is way to rich. How it run with out the air cleaner hooked up?? Could be a carb or air cleaner problem or the plugs are not hot enough. I also bet you have black smoke out the exhaust which also says to rich

I have noticed that old motors are a lot easier on plugs running the high octane gas.

What gasoline are you running?
