MF 240 HP Question

I was curious if anyone knew exactly when the Massey Ferguson 240 got a horsepower increase.
The was I understand it is they went up in horsepower after the MF 250 was discontinued. Just cant find out for certain when it happened.

I am looking at purchasing one with a serial # starting with N which should make it a 1988 model. Just would like to know what horsepower tractor is was buying. 6 PTO horsepower is quite a big difference.

The 240, and 250 had the same engine, tractordata shows the 240's had 46 hp, while the 250 had 44 hp (the 250's hp was rated different way than the 240's). I doubt you could tell the difference between the two power wise. Also according to tractordata the 240, and 250 had the same pto hp (about 41 hp).

I've wondered this myself.

The 250 and late 240 had same PTO HP.

Both have the same 152 perkins. 250 has heavier planetary rears and factory aux hydraulics with better GPM.

The 240 made while the 250 was in production was 35 PTO HP or so.

250 was made until 1986 or 87. I think the 240 went to the 250 rating after 250 discontinued.

I put a lot of hours on a 250 and have a 240 in the yard now.

I agree its confusing. The way I understood it they had 41 PTO hp
after the 250 was discontinued but Im unable to find that to be
fact.

How do you like your 240? I really like their stance and simplicity. I
want something smaller like a 240 to use for garden plowing and
tilling. Would also be nice to have something easy on fuel to take
and tedder hay.

It's a great tractor really, lots of power for the size, light and nimble. it teds and rakes a lot of hay, will do that on a couple gallons a day too. Different times I've gone to fuel it and it is still almost full! Very fuel efficient.

I've only plowed a very little with it as I plow with larger tractor, but it's handy size for garden. I have 3pt hiller for it. It's fast on the road too, 22 MPH or so.

Simple and basic with little to go wrong. My main dislike is the dry drum brakes, they work ok but no comparison to the hydraulic ones for pedal effort and grip.
