Massey Ferguson 1105 PTO how to engage ?

Hi guys. I am a handyan/mechanic. I do al sorts of work. I was recently ask by a farmer to check what is wrong with his Massey Ferguson 1105 tractor pto functioning. Iam not familiar with those tractors.
My first question is : Where and how do i engage the pto ?
I did found a lever at the back of the tractor but it seems that when i pull that lever then the gears grinds before engagement. What i dont understand is why is that lever at the back. And how do you control the soft start if it doesnt work with the clutch pedal.
Second question : Is there any other lever that i am supposed to select ?
Third question : Do i have to put the gearbox in neutral or park ? High or low ?
Any pictures perhaps or even a short video would be highly appreciated.
Thanks
Robin

Operator's manuals can be great things. What did he say he has for a problem?

The handle you are pulling on, is moving a sliding coupling used to disconnect the PTO hydraulic clutch pack from the shaft, as a safety measure, when hooking/unhooking PTO driven equipment. It will grind when engaging it if the tractor is running, and PTO internals are turning (even if the selector lever in the dash is set to off). The lever, used by the operator, to control the PTO operation, once hooked up and the mechanical disconnect has been engaged, is the small lever on the dash labelled Independent PTO. Down is off, up is on. If not working that way, he may have internal PTO issues.

If the park pawl is still intact be careful using it. It can "lock in" if it tractor rolls against it and puts much load on it.

Thanks. Yes the problem is he bought the tractor 2nd hand from someone else. And the other problem is there is no markings on the dash. Never knew that there is another lever for the pto except the one at the rear. Also no manual.
So what is the step by step procedure to start the pto ?
He wants to run a hammer mill.
Thanks

I think he should have asked some questions before purchasing it. Some of this may sound harsh, but I don't want to be responsible for hurting someone. Why would he/you think the PTO was only controlled by the lever you have to be on the ground to reach and operate? I told you how to use the PTO in my other post. There are other things there that can get him/you in trouble if you don't understand them, Multipower being one.

No manuals, no markings on the dash, and considering that he /you are apparently unfamiliar with Masseys, is not good. He can have an electronic copy of the Operator's manual shortly after 8:00 AM CST this morning, if he/you contact AGCOpubs.

There is a phone number at the upper right of their homepage to call for assistance. Here is a picture of the page and the manuals they have for the 1105.

The Operator Station Independent PTO lever is the one closest to the steering wheel in this picture. You do not need to use the engine clutch to engage it. It must be off (down) when hooking/unhooking equipment. Hook the PTO implement drive shaft to the tractor (the tractor does not need to be running during hooking/unhooking). Then engage the disconnect lever, you asked about in your original post. The PTO can then be turned on and off from the operator's station, where one is located away from the PTO driveline.

Please, get and study the manuals before someone gets hurt.

Thanks for your input and reply. Yes i also think he should have done his homework before buying. He is not a very technical guy. I grew up with a Nuffield and B250 International tractor they both work from a selection lever and you control the start up from the clutch pedal. Forgot to mention. I am from South Africa.
There is only one lever on the dash so i asume its for the pto clutch then.
Thanks
