Hydraulic pump driveshaft for loader

Hey guys,

So the splines are worn on this shaft (pump too) and I wanted to know your thoughts on how you think this coupler is attached. It looks like its brazed on or something. If so, I am very surprised its not a one piece shaft.

So that begs the question, why buy a new shaft? They are like what....130-150 bucks? Seems like I could get a new coupler (BTW its 7/8" diameter 13 tooth) and replace. Not sure if I would try to separate old coupler or just turn it off on my lathe and weld new one on. Still debating on that.

I also noticed that the spline engagement between the female coupler and the male splines on the pump shaft was not as much as I expected. I will prob extend the coupler 1/4-3/8 to get more of a bite on the pump splines

Oh and for anyone who is in this situation, Massey has a "proprietary" tool that's used to remove the pump driveshaft (LH threads btw). That's all nonsense. The front loaders on fords use a double ended male/male spline driveshaft, same size 7/8-13T spline. You get get them for $25 bucks brand new. Cut them in half and weld a nut on. Easy.

thanks,

Drew
