MF 135 3 point/hydraulic issues

Hi folks. I have a MF 135 and need some pointers for checking the 3 point lift and hydraulics. I have a 6 foot rotary mower on and when I engage the 3 point the implement won't raise on it's own. I have to pull on it and then it will raise. It also will not maintain its height, it starts creeping down and takes a few minutes to come down. Should I just change out the fluid and clean the filter and see if that works or is there more to inspect? Thanks for your help.

I'm just coming along for the ride info wise...

However, you have the draft lever all the way up right? If you have a remote/diverter it could also be a source of loss of pressure if it's either not thrown all the way, or the switch valves might be messing you up.
Always better to check you've got all the valves/switches lined up the way they need to be before you start tearing things apart.

Yes, both levers up. No, I don't have a remote, just the stock system.

Did it work normally before or have you just acquired this tractor and are trying to fix it? When you say you have to pull on it to get it to raise, what do you mean exactly? I haven't worked on the 135 hydraulic system, just the earlier TO35/MF35/MF50 version, but I would look for internal leaks and also check the control adjustments in the service book.

I acquired the tractor last summer . About 1 out of 10 tries, the implement will lift when I pull the lever. Otherwise it stays put unless I get off the seat, go to the back of the mower and pull up. Then the arms raise, but over a few minutes they lower back down. I reckon there is a leak or leaks in the system and I need to change out the fluid and inspect anyway. Thanks.

Are you by chance pulling the lift arm all the way up in to the constant pumping setting? I don't honestly know what that would do on a machine without the accessory valve...

Weird that it's inconsistent.

Without anything on the 3 point will the arms raise up by themselves? if so after you shut the engine off how long do the stay up? It is normal for them to drop down when the engine if off but they should drop very slowly, if they drop really fast then you have problems (I would say the lift cylinder for the 3 point needs some work).

The strainer for the hydraulic pump could be just choked up with crud, most people do not know it has a strainer since most seem to think there is a external filter if it's supposed to have one therefore it never gets serviced.

Okay I have changed the strainer and put in 6 gallons of new fluid, but no change. Can I take off the right side cover with the 6 gallons in, or do I need to drain it again. (I know it takes 8 gallons. )

I found another thread that says 6 gallons won't overflow if you take the right side plate off, so I will check the pump assembly today.

Here's that thread:

Alright. When the PC lever is moved towards UP the pump engages and the lift shudders and wants to raise but doesn't quite make it. If I squeeze the lever with just a little pressure the lift raises up. If I release, the lift falls. I understand there's an adjustment screw at the bottom of the lever(11)--I assume that I will need to drain the fluid and move the screw out so that it engages the pump sooner. Is that right?
Or is the only adjustment screw the stop screw at the top of the vertical lever (10)?

Result. I was able to make the adjustment by screwing in the top screw on the control arm so it would engage the pump sooner. It's now raising and lowering as it should.

Where exactly is the "top screw" in your drawing?

Sorry, it's confusing how I wrote it: on
the control lever (10) towards the bottom
there's an adjusting screw. I was also
looking at another diagram from my parts
book that showed another screw at the
bottom of the lower lever (11) that isn't
shown on the picture I posted. Adjusting
the screw on lever (10) solved my problem.
