M.H. 44 diesel

I have a 44 diesel with american bosch pump that starts instantly and accelerates the first time you open
throttle but after that it barely opens up and ends up dying. Strangely after it dies it will instantly start
right back up and accelerate once then back to running sluggish and dying again. It has the internal governor
and I am thinking that may be the problem. I drained the fuel and put in fresh and also changed fuel filters
which didnt make any difference. Any ideas. Thanks

If you start it and leave it at idle will it keep running? Are there any rubber fuel lines on the tractor? It sounds like it might have a moveable fuel restriction. When the fuel demand increases it closes of the fuel supply, when the engine stops the fuel supply opens up again and you can restart it.

Check the COMPLETE fuel system flow starting at the tank. I've seen what looks to be good flow for a few seconds slow down to a trickle after a couple minutes. The American Bosch governor does not fail like the tractor is acting. Also look at the supply pump feed pressure, if the control pressure valve sticks open system won't keep flow to the injection pump as needed.

It has full flow from tank but when I first start it if I rev it up I can put it in road gear and ride brakes and it will pull like crazy and put out black smoke but as soon as I throttle it down it wont hardly pull its self and wont accelerate back up and dies. As always it will start right back up and run good the first time. When I first start it will idle perfect until you rev it up and then go back to idle. Mystery

If it's the PSB rotary pump, a sticking control unit will cause erratic governor action too. It MUST move freely, if it's sticky the governor can't turn on/off the unit as needed for smooth engine operation.
