How to work on headlights

Regarding a 1976 Massey Ferguson 245 Diesel.

When this tractor was purchased, the wiring from the light switch knob to the headlights was disconnected.

There are four bolts on the front plate surrounding the headlights that can be removed. However, this plate cannot be pulled over the headlights.

How do you replace the headlights and gain access to reattach the wiring to the headlights ?

Don't know about the 235, but I went through lots of difficulaites on my 240-S, until I actually read the owner's manual, and replacing lights is so simple; just unclip the bulbs from inside the grill, replace, re-clip. Didn't need to unbolt lights, remove, replace nuts and bolts, mess around with all that .... very simple.

hearnc843,

Is there a diagram for the 245 ?

The 285 is quite different.

When looking for a diagram for this tractor model, the 245 isn't an option.

Remove the four bolts and pull the assembly out/rotate where you can get to the back of the bulbs, just like the old 3 prong headlight sockets on older cars OR if your rubber bulb holders are worn/cracked the bulb will pop out with not much effort. The wiring diagram is in the Operators Manual.

MF#1,

Thanks for the help.

The four assembly bolts are out, but the assembly can't pull over the bulbs as the holes are too small.

How do you remove the headlight bulbs ? Are they secured from the back with a nut ?

I've tried to pull and twist them, but they don't budge.

From looking at the 245 parts book, in the link hearnc843 gave you, the light pod has a stud out the back with a nut securing it.

Jim.ME,

I saw the diagram, but it looks like the "Frame Assembly, Grille" (Part #772737M92) has to be removed to get to that nut to remove the bulb.

I was trying to see if there was a way to avoid removing the frame assembly.

Are yours round with a rubber grommet between the bulb and the housing? That pops out (may be difficult with stiff old grommets) and you replace the bulb, pop it back in. You don't need to remove the bucket or anything else.

Skip to about 17:30. He pops the bulb out and replaces it
