timing a Perkins gas engine

I gather that to get TDC on cylinder 1, I have to remove the gas tank to remove the spark plug. There must be an easier way to do this.
 
remove the valve cover then and watch #1's running mate which is #4 cyl. when it is on the rock #1 will be on compression. then just line up the timing marks to the factory spec. help to know what tractor your talking about.
 
Bring the flywheel to TDC, then look to see if the rotor terminalis aimed toward the front cylinder plug wire post on with the cap off. If it is, engine is on number one. If it's NOT, turn flywheel ONE complete turn..
