Massey Harris 55 Oil Filter

I am having a hell of a time finding the correct oil filter for my 1952 55. I currently have a wix 57290 in there. The height seems correct but the top rubber seal on the filter doesnt seal to the inner tube. Wix only lists 2 possible filters the 57920 and the 51503 which i tried and is too tall. My middle tube on canister is about 1/2 and the filter seal i.d is about 7/8. Filter height is about 6 which seems correct and bottom seal seals down against the lower plate in canister. Any help would be great as I just cant figure this out. [/img:3fb4ae60a2]

Sorry here are pics

Parts diagram shows spring on top, it was on top when i took out the real old filter. If I put the spring on the bottom I run in to the same problem, the bottom of filter would not be sealed. I am ready to yank this thing off and put a spin on filter assembly on.

Every local ag store and online store. Any filter that is the right height is too large of i.d. All the taller filters have the right i.d. Only thing i can think if is I am maybe missing a washer/seal thing between my spring and filter.

There are two diesel 55 parts books and 2 gas and LP books on line. Depending on serial number the same housings show up for all three fuels.

When I cross the 3 pack part number (840870M91) from the parts book. It comes up to a 51021 and a 51039 gasket in WIX. I know the 1004894M91 crosses to the 51503 but I have seen this before as to coming up with different number when crossing the singles or the pack numbers. You may want to check out the 51021.

The other thing to check out is the housing itself against the parts books. They show two different housings. One uses a bolt (external threads) threading into the center tube of the housing, and a spring under the cover. While one can't always tell by the parts book drawing the filter spring shows as tapered, and yours looks heavier than I would expect to see. A tapered spring can collapse inside itself and be flat when fully compressed. The straight spring becomes solid when fully compressed and has height. The other housing shows a closed nut in the cover that thread on to external threads on the center tube. That one shows [u:5e430bf020]no[/u:5e430bf020] spring used. The element for that housing's 3 pack # 840750M91, crosses to the 51503 Wix. It looks like your housing stud would be in the second type housing. Just passing on what I found and see.

How about a picture of the underside of your cover?

Thanks for all the info, my housing would be the second type as the nut on top has internal threads. Do you know if there is supposed to be a plate in the bottom of that housing? Or should i be able to see the bottom of the canister when i look in? I wonder if this canister is off a 44? The 51503 is too tall, lid wont get close to fitting even without a spring.

I don't know about the plate and don't have one to look at. All I can say is it doesn't show a plate as a separate part in the books.

You can use the online AGCO parts books to look at parts manuals for most models.

I will have to snap a pic of inside of cap tomorrow. Anyone that is around there tractor could they measure the overall heigh of there canister and which filter they are using?

I don't have a 55 but all my Massey canisters have a plate both top and bottom. The filter seals against the plates not the inner id. Should be a plate on the bottom, then the filter, another plate, spring and cover. The two plates with the spring squeeze the filter so the oil has to go through it. Very simple set up. On all my canisters the top plate and spring are captured in the top cover and stay with the cover when removed. In the picture it looks like to me the spring is way too stiff and the plate is missing. The filter should be even with the top of the canister and the spring should compress very easily until the cover can be threaded on. Hope this helps..

That makes perfect sense, someone butchered this likely. Does the top plate have a seal around center tube? I could probably just use a washer between top of filter and spring that fits tight around center tube.

This is what I came up with for a washer between spring and filter. It doesnt have a seal but only has maybe .002 play on center tube so shouldnt let much of anything by. I can fairly easily push the top lid fully closed by hand so I dont think the spring has too too much pressure. What do you guys think? I just want to make sure my oil is going to be getting properly filtered!

Here is the video

The washer you show in the video should work just fine, washer, spring and cover and you are all set. It's just a by pass filter so if it leaks by a tiny bit it doesn't make any difference. The factory cover had the spring captured between the cover and the plate, the plate was fastened to the center bolt so it was all one unit.

Thanks! That gives me some reassurance. Next oil change I may switch it over to a spin in type. Just hate to loose the original look.

If that engine does have a bypass oil filter system (a small oil hole feeding the filter, and it dumps back into the oil pan) that oil filter doesn't do much. I would just change the oil every so often more than worry about changing the oil filter at every oil change.

K thanks, yes it is a bypass filter so that is good to know. How many hours do you guys go on an oil change? I work this tractor a fair amount.

MY 1951 44d has canister dia. Of 4.625 And, 6.625 from bottom of
flange to top of the center tube. This is the bottom of the lid.

I don't currently have a filter on
hand. Tractor is going back
together hents, the nice clean
filter housing to photo. Sorry

No problem at all, looks basically like what I have going on with the washer now so I think I will call it good for now. Thanks again
