MF 135 3 cyl perkins lost prime plenty of gas

Haven't gotten back to the 205 yet. Ended up with a different neighbors MF 135 with 3cyl Perkins. When, started ran, then it died. Had 7 gallons of fuel in it. Only way we got it going again was to blead the lines per the book-starting at the lift pump to the filter, then the injector pump to the injectors. So for now it's running. But why how did it get air in the lines? Could the lift pump be going bad?

I had that problem years ago with a 165. Turned out to a crack in the diaphragm of the lift pump. Couldn't see the the crack until I held it up to the sun.

Yes, a bad feed pump will cause air in the system. What happens is the injection pump vane pump will try to pull fuel when the lift pump fails, and the air comes in backward from the constant bleed orifice on the filter base top return line to the tank. That line should have a small amount of fuel coming out of the filter back to tank at all times with engine running, and usually does IF the feed pump works.
Plugged/restricted fuel filter will cause the same problem too.
