I overhauled the engine in my 175 Diesel several years ago. New pistons, sleeves, valves and seats with in spec
valve recession (.029-.039) Timed the injection pump at 23 degrees on the flywheel and the C mark aligned on the
pump. Anyhow put in a good battery with good cranking speed. Engine wouldn't start below 50 degrees. Tried it
this morning (around 40 degrees) and the same thing. Decided to retard the pump timing some and bam! fired right
off. My question is how much should or can can the pump timing be retarded and what is the downside to having it
where it will start good when cold? Will it run like it should when hot? Will you lose horsepower or have any
other ill effects?
Thanks
