245 massy diesel, pto works, but no gears.

Neighbor was brush hogging, a chain got wrapped up in the drive line and instantly killed the tractor. He said it will start, the pto spins, but it has no forward or reverse, could the trans input shaft have twisted off?

Ouch, that's going to leave a mark :-( Was he bush hoggin' in ground drive or engine speed? Maybe the safety sleeve snapped the cotter pin that holds it on(Easier fix) or, as you suggested the shaft stripped(harder to fix). May have to pull the side inspection plate after draining some fluid to see.

As MF#! said, but more likely just snapped the coupler. That's what it's supposed to do to protect the trans/driveline.
