Starter Question

Have a Massey 275- good little tractor. Not starting with switch- replaced switch as it looked rusty. Didn't help. It will start with a screwdriver touch to solenoid post. Does that mean
the solenoid is still good? Do those safety switches ever wear out? Thanks in advance for any replies - this forum is a great source of knowledge.

Both the key switch and the safety switch CAN wear out. Since the screwdriver trick worked the solenoid is -probably- okay. Before I suspect the key switch I would check ALL the wires from the key to the safety switch. After ensuring it is out of gear jump the safety switch wires(there's only TWO) and try the key, if it works then the safety switch is suspect. Still not working then remove the wire connector at the key switch and jump across it, if it cranks then the key switch is bad. Notice if the safety switch has bullet connectors OR blade connectors then buy that type if it's bad. AND, you could have BOTH the key switch AND the safety switch bad, fairly rare but it could happen. Good Luck with it!
