MF 202 keeps stalling

Hello everyone, I recently bought a mf202 a few days ago. The former owner had it sitting for a while but cleaned out the carb before I bought it. It ran fine just loud and no major leaks. The day I got it I used it for about 4 hours with no issues. The following day it kept started constantly stalling out. I dumped in new fuel, added fuel stabilizer with injector cleaners, changed out the spark plugs and tried kerosene soaking the oil air bath. It starts up fine but wont stay running for long. The carb is getting clean fuel but doesnt seem like its getting enough air. It also appears that the mesh filter was replaced with steel wool. Should I replace that with new wool? Any suggestions?

For a test see how it runs with the air cleaner tube unhooked from the carb.

You say the carb is getting clean fuel. How much is the question. Did you pull the drain plug from the carb and hold a pint or larger container under the drain and time how long it takes to get a pint of gas in the container?

I ran it without the bottom oil catch and the rubber hose disconnected to just get it to park in a better spot and it ran better. How much fuel should I be getting to know its getting enough fuel? Should I replace the most likely already replaced mesh filter with course steel wool?

You should see a steady flow of gas from the drain, which should give you a pint in about a couple minutes.

I believe you can get proper (at least better than steel wool) mesh for the air filter but am not sure. Hopefully someone who has replaced it in theirs will be along to give you guidance on what to get.

Your MF202 carb has the fitting with the strainer shown below. It's the brass fitting that your fuel line hooks too. Pull that fitting out and see if it's clogged up. I had a problem on my MF202. That strainer was clogged up and it was running very poorly. You can get the fitting at a Tractor Supply Co. if you have one near, or you can order it off this website. This fitting is on the MF202 and the Ford 8N of which I have both.

Next, if your air cleaner has regular steel wool in it, get rid of that crap and get the correct stuff. You can also order it right here on YT. It actually fits my 8N and my MF202. You see it pictured below. You need to get two rolls of the stuff. If your air filter is stuffed with steel wool, I don't see how it's getting anywhere near the air it should get.
