MD 35 Rear crankshaft seal

Going to split the tractor and replace the clutch and bearings. I may do the rear crankshaft seal since it will be apart. Has anyone used the new rubber lip seal and wheret is it available to purchase?

.

Hi

Yes we have fitted 6 in total to date in MF35 A3.152 and MF135 AD3 152

We had no problems and the longest has been fitted a year,

we have had no problems with the installation and have had no leakage and would class the modification a success and would recommend

full instructions are included and were easy to follow, most were fitted to engines with many hours on the clock, only 1 was a rebuilt engine but the crank had been ground and we no problems

We believe if this was fitted to a very worn engine with the crank moving about excessively , this may also work due to its flexibility but this theory is untested at the moment

Kind regards

If anyone knows of a supplier of said LIP SEAL upgrade in the USA / CANADA I would purchase then from them. As is I am looking at purchasing out of the UK.

Below is my original post on YT

Bob..
I have a new complete dual clutch / pressure plate assembly, pilot bearing, and throughout bearing to install in my 1963 MF FE 35 X Tractor,3 cylinder Perkins diesel. Engine S# 1968212 Tractor S # SNMY320137
There is a conversation kit available as per pictures, so as to install a LIP SEAL on aft of Crankshaft, instead of rope seal.

Has anyone one here on YT actually done the upgrade as per above?

I did receive an e-mail from the supplier advising me this is proven up grade.

I prefer to hear from a hands on mechanic more so that a sales person.
Bob...

FYI
Below is the original e-mail from the gentleman whom claimed to have developed the Seal

I NEVER purchased the seal, as its not available in CANADA...NO confirmation from anyone in the USA or CANADA....at $80.00 + dollars per seal...I require a hands on confirmation that it is a better than original styled SEAL.

Just my two cents......

to me, Kendal

Good Morning ( for me ) Mr Sipe

This product was my design so I can talk about it all day long. I saw the project from design to testing.

It works like a charm. To install, boil water and put seal in for 5 mins.

Then put over crank boss and install new housing.

You need midget fingers to install the top centre and bottom centre screws but youll get there.

If it leaks ill come over and clean it up for you.

I have ccd in this email our Canadian distributor who will put you in touch with your nearest dealer.

Im not sure I keep stock of that item in Canada so I will send it over on the next container.

Perhaps if you have a shopping list, order the whole lot together, to reduce shipping.

Now your tractor is a 35X. The FE35 is a 4 cyliner 23c Standard Motor Company grey and gold machine.

To help you on your restoration quest her is a pdf copy of the original mf workshop repair manual

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1PK5bUNSO7IojpOzedkGR-CcJuFtzpiaM

I have also attached the original workshop repair manual for your engine gratis.

Now I need some info from you. no owner /operators in Canada / USA can comment . Can you direct me to the facebook groups or dealers, or associations that did not know about us etc where these topics are being discussed in Canada / USA? I want to spread the QTP word.

Kind Regards,

Allen Buckley

John Deer D.

Thats some great info. What does he mean by crankshaft boss? Is that the rear crankshaft flange just behind the seal retainer? And from his email he says he was going to ship some over to his distributors in Canada. I didn't know we had a Quality Tracror Parts QTP supplier in Canada.

If boiling the seal in water for 5 minutes is the install instructions then this rubber must stretch like crazy to fit over the crankshaft flange. I would worry the lip would get nicked and ruin the sealing capability.

Bob

I found a supplier for Quality Tractor Parts of Iteland in Ontario who supplies several dealers across Canada. I just bought the modified lip seal from.My Tractor which has a website: www.external_link.com

$130 canadian for that new seal and carrier. I'm going to try it.

Good day Cormiers Cove..

My e-mail is open....could you please send me the suppliers name in Ontario ??

Thanks
Bob..

I'm based in Ireland and use QTP parts. To be fair to them with oil seals they have modified both the MF35 rear axle half shaft inner seal and the PTO seal and both are very good. Way more flexy rubber in them.

That Allen Buckley is the founders son.

The vintage club in attached to one of our members has used the modified rear crank seal and as of yet has had no issue with oil leaks.
QTP have a video tutorial of the installation of that seal on there website if your interested.

Then rope seal wasn't a great system from Massey. I've yet to see a MF35 that hasn't an oil leak at the weep hole of the bell housing.
