TO35 Shifting PTO Difficult whole lot of Grinding

My Massey Ferguson TO35 has a live PTO. When shifting the PTO in or out of gear very difficult, grinding of the gears is excessive. What is the best RPM I should be using when shifting? Is there any adjustment to the lever or clutch or is the only fix is to split the tractor and inspect? Would the oil level in the transmission have any bearing on the problem? Does anyone have any suggestions
for fixes?

You want the RPM to be the lowest possible, then press the pedal all the way down and wait a few seconds before you push in the PTO lever. It it still won't engage it maybe the same problem my to35 had until I adjusted the clutch pedal to allow it to push in the clutch fingers further in to allow the PTO to be engaged.

No need to split yet.

Option 1
[b:6cd02842ae]With the tractor off[/b:6cd02842ae], from the bottom inspection plate look at the engagement of the throughout bearing to clutch fingers you want them to be as close as possible without actually touching like 1/16 so that when you press down it engages the fingers.

Follow procedure from this picture for adjusting the clutch pedal.

with a helper, start the tractor and observe engagement, rubbing on throughout bearing, when clutch is not engaged you don't want the bearing to spin or it will wear prematurely.

Option 2
PTO disk adjustment per BigDean procedure

Clutch pad is worn out or the clutch needs adjustments.

My TO35 Deluxe 1955 had a replacement main clutch, original PTO clutch, needed slight adjustment, but had a cracked clutch finger. I obtained a replacement finger and installed both the main and PTO new clutch plates plus adjustment. I had already split the tractor, stripped and replaced parts in the transmission, and so the additional clutch repairs were quite 'easy'. Make sure to have the correct clutch centering/alignment plug for when you put the tractor back together.

Edit: make sure to buy new shifter boot seals. They are under $3 for the pair and will help you avoid a locked transmission due to water getting passed old rubber boot seals.
