Newbie Dumb question.. 12v regulator needed?

If I am removing a generator in my f40 and installing a one wire alternator.... do I still need the 12V regulator? The kit I bought has a 3ohm on resistor but no instructions stating to remove the 12v regulator (square black box where all the wires are going into).

As Jim stated remove the generator regulator. Your alternator has a built in regulator.

The resistor has nothing to do with the alternator or regulator. It is to limit current through the coil when you change to 12 volts on a 6 volt system. The resistor would go between switch and coil if using the original 6 volt coil. You could change it to a direct 12 volt no resistor required coil and eliminate the resistor.

If you decide to use the supplied resistor with original coil check the resistance across the resistor. I have seen several kit resistors with much too high a resistance and result in hard starting. The resistance of the coil should nearly equal the resistance across the + and - terminals of the coil, or about 1 1/2 ohms
