Rear axle seal replacement ..... 88 vs 35, etc.

I'm posting this question for a friend. Is the basic design of the rear axles (axles, seals, bearings, etc) similar between a model 88 and a model 35? A friend has asked about doing this on a model 88. Info on the web about doing axle seal replacement on a 35 seems to be available. I'm guessing that the basic layout is similar and also for the procedures involved for the two models. Obviously, he does not have a manual.

Any comments in a reply would be appreciated as to my question or further, to how big of a job it might be and what kinds of obstacles might one encounter along the way to get it done. Somehow I doubt it is a job for a weekend shade tree mechanic.

The MF 88 is not even close to the MF 35 axle/brake design, the 88 has inboard disc brakes and a planetary at the drive wheel. The 35 has no planetary with shoe/drum brakes at the wheel.

DT: Thanks ....... The original questions the fellow was asking was:

1)Did the tractor have to be split to replace the rear axle seals? That's what he asked, a surprising question, never heard of doing that before to work on the axles but I'm no mechanic believe me.

2)Is the leaking seal an inner one and the oil is just seeping out of past it and then past the outer seal too?

Obviously the rear axle castings would have to come off ..... the whole assembly right?

Those are great videos Scoobie, thanks for that, if it were my tractor I'd be tempted to do it my self even though I'm not a skilled mechanic (but I have done a fair amoutn of amateur work on stuff). That is if it were just an outer seal leaking which by the sounds of it, it would just be an outer seal. Obviously, oil is continuous right out to the planetary gears on the outside end of the axle housing for lubing those gears so there is no inner seal to contend with (which might get a bit scary).

I fined these manuals are my go tooo's

Thanks JDD: No doubt he needs a manual, and as someone else has mentioned, the 35 is a whole different ball game than an 88. Good example though of how a manual simplifies the process and most guys with basic mechanical skills and tools could probably do that themselves.
