Model 60 PT combine round hole lower sieve

I'm getting ready to thresh some winter wheat and the manual says to use a 7/16 round hole lower sieve. Of course, I don't have one. I have 5/6 and 3/8. but we are having a bit of a drought here and when I measure the wheat kennels they are mostly 1/4 long. The longest ones are 5/16. What is the criteria for deciding what size sieve to use for grain ? Do you think I can get away with the 5/16 holes ?
Thanks
Greg

I have no experience with a 60 combine but the ones u have are real close to manual. U need one that the grain goes thru but not the trash. better to keep the grain even if a little dirtier. If its like like newer Massey combines, the round hole seive is ahead of the (lower) fingered seive and sometimes the round hole seive is just removed if holes too small, because if the grain can't get thru it will overload lower seive and returns.

That's interesting. On this machine the adjustable sieve is always the top one. It would be nice to use a round hole sieve up there because even closed up entirely the holes are 7/16 - 1/2 inch and they are really heavy. Once they are open all kinds of junk gets through.

The 5/16 holes worked great on the lower sieve. There were still bits of threshed heads. Either they were just lucky or too much was going through the upper.

Thanks for the reply
