MF1135 steering leaks fluid

A lot of hydraulic oil coming down from the front rack and pinion housing up front. Haven't delved into it too deeply yet. I have the Service Manual.

What I assume is that the steering shaft has the seals etc. that have failed.

Looks like I need to determine if this tractor has a fixed or adjustable rack, and locate the appropriate parts for the rebuild.

Any additional hints or advice on this repair job?

Pulled rack housing cylinders and find that they are in pretty good shape, will hone them to clean up light scratches.

BUT I did find that there is metallic contamination on the pressure side of the "Starboard" piston, that has scuffed the pistons a little bit and scuffed the teflon/plastic piston rings significantly. In the photo you can see a couple of imbedded metal bits.

I will replace the rings after a cleanup, but the presence of metal is worrisome. I had planned to totally replace seals, bushings etc, but I may just clean it up and replace the rings to see if that resolves the leaking, as it's only an hour labor to get this far into the box.

The metal issue is there, see the photo.....and if fluid gets past the scuffed rings AND leaks down the steering gear...that means my hunch on the shaft seal failing is valid.

What would y'all do? Where is that metal coming from? The control unit?

Client reports that he had to keep turning the steering wheel to one side to keep the tractor running straight when towing a large motor home on the farm.

This jives with the findings of one side of the rack piston set is scuffed, and leaking steering fluid.

Can anyone chime in and suggest the fix? Will a flushing of the control unit and replacement of the piston rings in honed cylinders be the solution?

Or is a thorough rebuild of everything needed?

I will be draining and pulling the bottom screen to check for junk, the filter housing was full of a sludge, and I'm going to cut the filter apart to Dx the content.
