Mf40 no reverse

I have a Massey MF40 I believe its a 74 (guessing by serial). I
bought it a couple weeks ago and i have everything working
now but reverse. It has the instant reverse. I am new to
tractors but am mechanically inclined and have spent alot of
time researching to get this far with it. I have downloaded the
operating manual as well as shop manual but i really dont
know where to start with this issue. I saw some post about
greasing up the lever so i tried that and still no go. I messed
with the linkage a little but no go. Forward works. The
previous owner said that reverse worked sometimes and truly
seemed surprised it wasn’t working when we went to load it.

There are a number of possible causes for no reverse on an instant reverse. First is to check the lever on the bell housing. It should move equally forward and backward by the forward and reverse pedals. If it moves as it should then it's an internal issue and the tractor will need to be split to fix. It could be that the reverse clutches are worn-out or one of the sealing rings are leaking. If the lever doesn't move equally forward and backward make sure the linkage to the pedals are ajusted properly.
